Thanks for both your blog post and the radio story. Looks like small towns and Russian Icons are a winning match! Another major collection of Russian Icons is in Vicenza, an Italian city (80km from Venice) that counts 120.000 inhabitants only.

The collection (more than 400 ancient Russian icons from the XIII to the XX century) is regarded as one of the most important in the West for its chronological variety, its narrative themes, and the presence of some true masterpieces.

A selection of 130 icons is permanently exhibited in the Galleries of Leoni Montanari Palace and in the museum website; it can also be experienced through an immersive virtual visit.

I'm really concerned that if global warming keeps up at its current reported rate, the rainforest will dry out even faster, which will lead to less moisture, which in turn will heat up the globe even faster. See it is a continuously repeating cycle. If I may recommend a book, it is called An Inconvenient Truth. And no I am not trying to make a political statement. This book was also turned into a documentary-style movie, with Al Gore himself speaking all the way through. I'd recommend reading the book first, then watching the movie.

Hello Alex,
I listened to the NPR report on the radio, I listened to the podcasted interview on The World. I looked at your lovely pictures. I saw the video on youtube from the Technical High School in Ecuador. I read Twitter, and your Blogg. This is all part of a technology class I'm taking at a college in Philadelphia. I'm 59 years old and peddaling fast to get up to date with the Web 2.0 platforms. I'm impressed that you're doing it ALL, and doing it well. Thank you for your efforts to keep us informed. I, for one, appreciate it.

Hello. Yeah, the BBC is doing a whole series on the Amazon this week. I listen to a Portuguese webcast called bbcparaafrica.com. Not that I am fluent in Portuguese, but they did something similar to what you did. They sent a journalist called Luís into the Amazon. In one story they posted on the website two days ago, there was a program to use satellite imagery and computers to monitor the deforested ares of the Amazon. The Amazon is a very important one to keep on the radar.

Alex, I am from Brazil and I will try to clarify the many names that we Brazilians give to the Amazon river. In Brazilian geography we are thought that the Amazon river is born in Peru under the name Ucayle, when it crosses the border into Brazil it becomes Solimoes river and when it passes Manaus and becomes very large it is called Amazon the rest of the way until it reaches the Atlantic ocean. Basically it is the same river with three names, don't ask me why?
One other thing, the Negro and Solimoes waters have different densities (Solimoes with more suspended particles), and different temperatures (the Negro river is alot colder than the Solimoes.) These are also factors that keep them from mixing.

I lived in that region of Brasil for 9 years, now I live in USA... I imagine how different it is for you to be there, specially in Manaus. Since you are there make sure that you go to the opera house, to the market by the port (it is very interesting at the market because there are so many different fruits, fish, animals, and sounds it is definitely an interesting place to go.)

I hope you enjoy your trip!

I will be following you through your blog

Alex, I am from Brazil and I will try to clarify the many names that we Brazilians give to the Amazon river. In Brazilian geography we are thought that the Amazon river is born in Peru under the name Ucayle, when it crosses the border into Brazil it becomes Solimoes river and when it passes Manaus and becomes very large it is called Amazon the rest of the way until it reaches the Atlantic ocean. Basically it is the same river with three names, don’t ask me why?
One other thing, the Negro and Solimoes waters have different densities (Solimoes with more suspended particles), and different temperatures (the Negro river is alot colder than the Solimoes.) These are also factors that keep them from mixing.

I lived in that region of Brasil for 9 years, now I live in USA… I imagine how different it is for you to be there, specially in Manaus. Since you are there make sure that you go to the opera house, to the market by the port (it is very interesting at the market because there are so many different fruits, fish, animals, and sounds it is definitely an interesting place to go.)

I hope you enjoy your trip!

I will be following you through your blog

Looking bloggy good, dude. By the way, since there's probably a butt-load of charcoal in Manaus, you can use small ziploc bags of bits of charcoal in lieu of silica gel. All it does is absorb moisture. Good luck bra' and have fun!

The rainforest of Brazil? I should have become a journalist!

It is too bad you didn't let me know before going, I could have added to your lists! I spent a month in Pananama some years back.

Anyway, good luck on your trip and I will check the blog to see your progress!

All of your preparations for the Amazon have reminded me of a book I read for an ethnobotany class in undergrad entitled One River. It's a bit of a scientific adventure memoir written by Harvard ethnobotanist Wade Davis about his experiences in the Amazon, within the historical frame of the exploits of his mentor Richard Evans Schultes. The main stories revolve around rubber and native uses of psychotropic plants--absolutely fascinating. It certainly makes you see coca in a whole new light!

Hi Alex,

To say I was shocked to see your comment on my blog is an understatement. I would be glad to put a link to "The World" in my post as well as a link to your personal blog. I appreciate all the work that I am sure goes into producing a show like "The World." I am a little embarrassed of my shoddy writing skills and I hope you won't judge me too harshly. It has been a long time since I have written anything with form. I stay at home with my children here in Southern California. My daughter was born with a lot of health and developmental problems and my whole life has become a blur of appointments, therapy sessions, procedures, and tests. I could have never imagined my life only extending to the 10 square miles around my house. Listening to "The World" has helped me to stay connected to, well, the world. It is also a reminder that some have it harder than I do, and that the human spirit overcoming hardship and suffering is a universal truth. I think that is what touched me about Cecil Rajendra's life. I thank you for sharing that with your audience. I am also glad that you gave me a new outlook on art of writing and reading poetry. I am not sure why I have never really enjoyed poetry, especially since I was a Speech Pathology major.

OK, this has gone on long enough. Thanks for the comment, I will gladly give you "props" on my blog. Please keep producing your wonderful show. It makes a difference in my life and keeps me from feeling like I have "mommy brain" (that's where you are so tired that you hand your son a snack of cat food instead of gold fish crackers).
